With turquoise seas, cinematic piazzas and mountains plunging straight into the ocean, the Amalfi Coast simply can’t get any more perfect when it comes to all round sensory overload. We’ll spend 8 days hiking and exploring arguably the world’s most stuninng stretch of coastline, characterized by a picturesque labyrinth of stairways, narrow alleys, cliff-side lemon groves, small beaches and pastel-colored fishing villages. Hike, indulge and live La Dolce Vita.

Our trip starts in Naples. We’ll meet you at the airport and head to our accommodation. After a meet and greet with our fellow Conqueror Adventurers, we’ll set off for a walk around this amazing ancient city.

Founded by Greeks in the first millennium BC, Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in the world. Blessed with rich volcanic soils, a bountiful sea, and countless generations of culinary know-how, the Naples region is one of Italy’s epicurean heavyweights, as well as a living masterpiece when it comes to architecture, ancient ruins and piazzas.

Looming large over Naples is Mount Vesuvius – one of only two active volcanos in Continental Europe and standing at 1281 meters above sea level. This iconic volcano’s symmetrical central cone and steep slopes are our destination this morning. We’ll embark on a short walk to the rim of the volcano and stare deep into the crater and out across Naples.

In AD79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, blowing the entire top of the mountain off, sending rocks, ash and dust over 10 miles into the sky and rained down on Pompeii for nearly a full day, burying it underneath millions of tonnes of volcanic debris.

Later, we’ll head to the village of Agerola, high above the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Bay of Salerno and our home for the next two nights.

Today we’ll hike the highest peaks of the Amalfi Coast. After breakfast, we’ll stroll through the charming village of Bomerano – also known locally as “little Switzerland”. We’ll continue through vineyards and chestnut tree forests, as the trail steepens. The forested slopes give way to sub-alpine tundra and we’ll eventually reach the ridge of Monte Tre Callistanding at 1122 metres above sea level. You’ll feel like you can reach out and touch the ocean from this spectacular point with jaw dropping views of the Mediterranean and Sorrento Peninsula . We’ll continue along this incredible ridgeline soaking in the views, before a picnic lunch. We’ll take our time to descend back down to the coast and rest up before dinner.

In typical Italian style, we’ll have an espresso before we embark on the famous Sentiero degli Dei (Pathway of the Gods) hike to Positano. Forests, fields of wildflowers, ancient stone huts and sheer walls of granite greet us around every bend – the breathtaking dramatic views of today’s hike can’t be overstated! Along the way, there’s a chance to taste delicious Agerola Mozarella cheese made by a local shepherd. We’ll continue to the iconic village of Positano – dramatically set into the coastal cliffs.

We’ll stop for lunch before passing a deep gorge with limestone walls and top off the day with a boat ride to Amalfi.

This morning we’ll start in the backstreets of Amalfi and hike up to the village Pontone. We’ll follow a narrow trail beneath rows of pine trees and through fields of wildflowers. Our first stop is a viewpoint of the Valle del Dragone (Valley of the Dragon) and luxurious gardens of Ravello. From here we’ll continue to the famous watchtower – Torre dello Zirro, which served as the lookout point for sea attacks on the Republic of Amalfi in the Middle Ages. We’ll continue on to the shaded Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Watermills). Here we’ll find remnants of Europe’s earliest paper mills, strewn among thick foliage fed by the valley’s streams. Keep an eye out for local lemon growers carrying their harvest in baskets on their heads! We’ll head back down to Amalfi where you’ll have the afternoon free for beach time.

Mighty cliffs, shard-like rock formations, crashing blue seas and tight pathways all characterize our trip to Capri Island today.

After breakfast we’ll take a short boat ride to the Island and hike a circuit passing Villa Jovis – the ruins of the most impressive Roman villa on the island and once home to Emperor Tiberius. We’ll continue through winding alleyways in the village of Capri and on to the high pathways overlooking a breathtaking coastline with blue grottoes and hidden coves. There’s time to dip our feet (or swim if you’re game!) before embarking back on a boat back to Amalfi.

Our final coast hugging hike leads us to one of the Amalfi Coasts most spectacular and secluded coves. There’s plenty of ascending and descending to get there though! Our destination is the Fiordo di Furore – a striking 250 metre deep gorge with an arched stone bridge crossing it and a rocky beach at its base. According to ancient legend the cove was formed by the devil himself who had tried in vain to grab the souls of the inhabitants of Furore and pull them in.

It would almost be rude not to have a swim here, so we’ll take the time to have a dip in the crystal clear waters with the rock walls towering above us, and looking straight up at the bridge above the fiord. We’ll head back to Amalfi with time to relax before our final dinner together.

GETTING THERE – FLIGHTS

Arriving in Naples is relatively simple.  There are numerous gateways to Italy and Naples from a number of cities throughout Europe by air. If you are flying into Rome, there is a regular train from Rome that leave to Naples throughout the day (almost 1 per hour). This takes about an hour and half. Talk to us if you need help arranging flights.
