New Zealand’s natural beauty is a playground just waiting to be explored by your family. From pristine beaches and lush forests to majestic mountains and enchanting caves, there’s an outdoor adventure for every age and interest. Let’s dive into some of the most unforgettable experiences that will connect your family with the wonders of nature.
Conquer Queenstown Hill
One of my go-to activities is the Queenstown Hill Time Walk. Now, I know what you’re thinking – hiking in the rain? Trust me on this one. This trail is a local favorite for a reason. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, rain or shine. Plus, there’s something magical about walking through the pine forest with the rain falling around you. It’s a moderate 3-mile (4.8 km) out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of 1,476 feet (450 meters), taking about 2-3 hours to complete. You’ll find the trailhead on Belfast Terrace, just a short walk from the town center. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and a waterproof jacket, and don’t forget to check the forecast before you head out!
Soar Above the Town with the Skyline Gondola
If you’d rather stay dry, hop on the Skyline Gondola. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve ridden this thing, and it never gets old. The views of the town, the lake, and the mountains are incredible, even on a cloudy day. The gondola operates from 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM daily, and you can find it on Brecon Street in Queenstown. You can choose from various ticket options, including gondola-only rides, gondola + luge combos, and even gondola + dinner packages. Once you’re at the top, there’s plenty to do – you can race down the luge, grab a bite to eat at the Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar, or even try your hand at stargazing.
Cruise Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw Steamship
Another great option is to take a cruise on the TSS Earnslaw. This historic steamship, which has been cruising since 1912, is a real icon of Queenstown, and cruising across Lake Wakatipu is a truly unique experience. You can find the TSS Earnslaw at Steamer Wharf on Beach Street. They have multiple departures daily, so be sure to check the schedule on their website, www.realjourneys.co.nz/en/experiences/cruises/tss-earnslaw-lake-cruises/. You can explore the ship, enjoy live piano music, and even visit Walter Peak High Country Farm for a farm tour and a delicious BBQ. It’s the perfect way to relax and escape the rain while still soaking up the beauty of Queenstown.
Conquer Your Fears at Fear Factory Queenstown
Now, if you’re looking for something a bit more… exciting, Fear Factory Queenstown is the place to be. This horror-themed attraction, located at 53 Shotover Street, is not for the faint of heart! I’ve been through it a few times, and it always gets my adrenaline pumping. The live actors, special effects, and spooky storylines are sure to give you a good scare. They have different scare levels to choose from, so you can tailor the experience to your bravery. Check their website, fearfactory.co.nz/queenstown/, for operating hours and ticket options.
Experience the Thrill of Virtual Reality at Thrillzone
For a different kind of thrill, check out Thrillzone Queenstown, also located at 53 Shotover Street. They’re open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. They have a fantastic selection of virtual reality experiences, escape rooms, laser tag, and arcade games that will keep you entertained for hours. You can find more information and ticket options on their website, www.thrillzone.co.nz/queenstown.
Challenge Your Mind at Escape Quest
Speaking of escape rooms, Escape Quest is another must-do for rainy days. Located at 37 Camp Street, they offer a variety of themed rooms with challenging puzzles that are perfect for groups of friends or families. They’re open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and you can book your escape room adventure on their website, www.escapequest.co.nz.
Journey Through Time at Time Tripper
And for something truly unique, head to Time Tripper, located at Main Town Pier. This underwater theatre takes you on a journey through time, starting millions of years ago. It’s a fascinating and educational experience that’s perfect for all ages. They’re open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and you can find ticket information on their website, www.kjet.co.nz/our-trips/time-tripper/.
Soak in Serenity at Onsen Hot Pools
Escape the hustle and bustle and head to Onsen Hot Pools. They offer private cedar-lined hot tubs filled with pure spring water, overlooking the stunning Shotover River Canyon. Each tub even has a retractable roof, so you can enjoy the view rain or shine! They also offer a range of spa treatments, including massages and facials. Onsen Hot Pools is located at 162 Arthurs Point Road and is open daily from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM. I highly recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season. You can find more information and book your experience on their website, www.onsen.co.nz.
Rejuvenate at a Day Spa
If you’re looking for a more traditional spa experience, Body Sanctum is the place to go. They offer a wide range of treatments, including massages, facials, body wraps, and scrubs. They also have saunas and steam rooms where you can relax and unwind. Body Sanctum is located at 10 Athol Street and is open daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Uncover the Past at the Lakes District Museum
Step back in time and learn about the fascinating history of Queenstown and the surrounding region at the Lakes District Museum. They have a wide range of exhibits and artifacts that tell the story of the area, from its early Maori inhabitants to the gold rush era and beyond. The museum is located at 49 Buckingham Street and is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Explore Queenstown’s Diverse Culinary Scene
Of course, no trip to Queenstown is complete without experiencing the local food scene. One of my favorite spots is Bespoke Kitchen, located at 9 Isle Street. They’re open daily from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. They have a fantastic menu with fresh, seasonal produce and stunning views of the lake. It’s the perfect place to warm up with a delicious meal on a rainy day. You can check out their menu and make a reservation on their website, bespokekitchen.nz.
Bounce the Day Away at SITE Trampoline
And if you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss SITE Trampoline, located at 130 Glenda Drive in Frankton. They’re open Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Saturday & Sunday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. You can find pricing and more information on their website, sitequeenstown.co.nz.
Another great option for families is Chipmunks Indoor Playground, located at Remarkables Park Town Centre. They’re open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and you can find details on their website, chipmunksplayland.co.nz/queenstown/.
